In technical terms, it’s called the dynamic range and refers to the ability to compensate for the difference in brightness. The human eye has a dynamic range of 2,000:1, while a camera falls short at 8:1. What this means is:

• - Vertical light can cast shadows that appear black on camera.
• - Horizontal light, on the other hand, accentuates and flatters.

This means the best time of day to photograph your little ray of hope outside is:

• - Early in the morning
• - On cloudy days
• - Late in the afternoon

Now keeping in mind what we’ve said about the dynamic range, let’s focus on your camera’s flash.

Aiming the flash directly at your child is probably not the best idea. It will startle them and could hurt their sensitive eyes. Additionally, it might produce a couple of harsh, unflattering shadows. Instead, try and bounce the flash off reflective objects. This will produce a more gentle effect in terms of lighting.

Lens & Zoom

Once you’ve got the lighting aspect of photography pat, it’s time to go pro. What this means is that you’ll have to start experimenting with different lenses as well as with your camera’s zoom function. Here are a couple of guidelines:

Hyperfocal

This technique often makes for superb photographs and simply involves combining a close foreground (or subject) with a deep background. To do this, simply use a wide-angle lens and zoom in on your baby. Remember to use a small aperture setting to keep everything in focus. Once done, snap away! If you’re not successful on the first attempt, try again with different settings. What you should see is a clear image of your baby with a slightly blurred background.

Composition

After all, only images that really say something can be classified as photographs. The rest remain mere pictures.

The Rule of Thirds

Take what you see through your camera and divide it in equal parts with two horizontal lines and two vertical lines. The main point of focus (the aspect of your child you are concentrating on) should be on any of the horizontal lines or where they intersect with the vertical lines. Avoid the corners as well as the center of your imaginary grid.

Pay Attention To Your Environment

To aid in the composition of that ultimate baby photograph, it is important to pay attention to objects, textures and shapes that will also be in the picture. More specifically, we’re referring to the lines these objects make. Here’s are a few guidelines:

Rubber Duck Candle Favors

I put tables that could seat four apiece in my basement rec room since that was plenty big enough for this size crowd. I put baby shower gifts in one corner, and then at the opposite end of the den was a table with appetizers, drinks, deserts, and a layered cake in the form of a rubber ducky and the words baby girl written on it. Each had a poster or two of Mickey Mouse or one of his friends; the ones of Daffy Duck and Daisy Duck were enormous.

At each table were little pink picture frames that I used as place card holders and each frame came with a baby duck in the corner. The punch bowl had ducks painted all over it, as did the plates, napkins, glasses, and favor candles that each guest received as a gift. I bought a bathtub for an infant that was in the form of a duck at a local retail place, and I put the punch bowl inside of it. It looked pretty adorable. I also bought duck molds and filled them with yellow colored water for duck shaped ice cubes. Believe me, it was the most ducks you’ve ever seen in one place at one time.

Other than a few things that people at school suggested to me, I borrowed most of my ideas from things I saw online. I got a duck baby shower favor that was a candle holder, and some duck shower favors that were rubber ducky bookmarks. Everyone thought they were so cute and they made super party gifts for the games we played too.

Before the guests starting arriving I filled a big square container with water and placed little rubber ducks in it. Every duck had a number on the under side of it, and every guest grabbed one duck out of the tub as they walked in. We gave out a prize for the person who had the winning number, which I pulled out of a hat a bit later during the shower. We had a lot of fun with the guess the baby picture game, too. The guests were told in advance to take a baby picture of theirs to the shower with them, and then we put them all on a board and put the board in the front of the room. Each guest got a chance to check out the board and see how many pictures they were able to match up with the faces of the other guests. The one with the most correct matches won a prize.

We had a lot of fun, great laughs and the mother to be got some really neat gifts for her little girl. Going on the net to help me put together this shower was an outstanding decision. At first I wasn’t too sure about it, but it turned out to be a really great baby shower. Going with the whole duck genre worked out swimmingly.
